"We are only inside behind our desk, so we have no health and safety risks." We feel safe behind our desk; construction workers can fall or get something on their head, but as long as everyone ties their shoelaces properly, doesn't office work seem very safe? Unfortunately, the most important, growing factor in absenteeism also affects (or precisely) office work: psychosocial workload (PSA).
From behind our desk we have only a poor view of the dangers that hang above our heads. In addition to the more visible burden that can lead to absenteeism, such as working at a computer screen and sitting for long periods, working under high pressure, aggression from customers and discrimination appears to be a bigger problem than you would like. Mental illness is the most common occupational disease.
Risks in the office:
• 24% of people in administrative professions experience high time pressure (monitor work);
• No less than one third of (partly) work-related absenteeism is related to PSA (Fact sheet PSA);
• TNO calculated that 58% of the costs for continued payment of work-related absenteeism will be borne by PSA (Arbobalans 2018).
Burnt-out
If not taken, PSA can lead to burnout. People with a burnout stay at home for more than six months on average! Much is now known about work stress and the options for preventing it. So it is time for offices to face up to the risks that exist and take measures. It is not that hard…
Attention to the risks
Viveen safety support b.v. can quickly and in a structured way map the safety and health risks in an office: thanks to our RI&E analysis. This online risk inventory and evaluation deals with the specific risks in an office, such as indoor climate (harmful effects of printers) and healthy computer work. In addition, there is therefore a lot of attention for psychosocial work risks, such as work pressure and aggression.
